JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for monitoring and improving standards of care through supervision of practice, clinical audit, team support, teaching and research.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide instruction/guidance of nursing procedures and direct nursing care activities maintaining high standard of practice in the ward/unit in accordance with Nursing policies and procedures.
2. Encourage nurses to critically examine their practice, and participate in assessing, evaluating and developing nursing standards of care and nursing departmental procedures.
3. Facilitate plans for admission and patient care, including direct teaching for patient's family with complex nursing care, and coordinate effective discharge planning.
4. Apply optimal coordination of patient care with effective interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration
5. Determine nursing priorities and plans patient care according to staff availability, and report toHead Nurse when changes affecting standards of care occur.
6. Ensure Physician’s orders are carried out, clarifying any areas of uncertainty and in any dispute regarding clinical management, refers the matter to the appropriate Medical Consultant.
7. Maintain safety policy and ensure that all accidents / incidents are reported to the Head Nurse and documented.
8. Ensure an effective hand-over of all duties and required information at shift change.
9. Maintaining safe custody and administration of medications according to KFMC policies and procedures.
10. Efficient ordering of supplies according to unit requirements and maintain inventory standards, allocation and distribution of all resources. Promotes practices to conserve resources and ensure they are used economically.
11. Ensure appropriate utilization and monitoring of manpower and all material resources.
12. Effective participation in unit/nursing committees and activities, andcontribute in initiatingnew development ideas and changes in standard nursing practices in response to clinical research data.
13. Support and assist the Head Nurse in the maintenance of high standards of nursing care.
14. Conduct performance evaluation sessions to review work performance.
15. Assist in planning and organizing introduction programs and in-service/ education teaching for the nursing personnel on the ward/unit.
16. Assist in preparation of ward/unit statistics.
17. Participate in conducting audits and research within the assigned unit
18. Perform and supervise other assigned tasks relevant to this function including but not limited to acting as Head Nurse, and taking patient load when needed.
