Job Summary
o interprets family history information and educate patients about genetic diseases.
o Helps families understand and adjust to a genetic diagnosis or the possibility of having a hereditary disorder .
o Helps families understand genetic testing options and the implications of undergoing genetic testing, as well as address psycho social and ethical issues associated with a genetic disorder or genetic test result; .
o Serves as educators to patients, physicians, and other health care providers and society about genetics.
Principal duties
1. Provides genetic assessment and counseling for individuals/families with a medical history of, or at
increased risk of having a child with a birth defect or genetic condition, or who are themselves at risk for a
genetic disorder.
2. Works as a member of the Medical Genetics team under the supervision of a physician medical Geneticist.
3. Provides comprehensive information regarding the diagnosis, etiology, recurrence risk and available
management options for a wide variety of genetic conditions.
4. Assesses psycho social issues and structures counseling session accordingly.
5. Assists the individual/family in making reproductive/health care decisions consistent with their beliefs,
while addressing cultural diversity and ethical issues. Provides international leadership in genetic
counseling services, research and education. Functions as community resource by liaising with the public
and striving to improve the genetic health of individual populations through discovery, application and
communication of genetic knowledge.
