The primary role of the BP analyst is to ensure that business processes and supporting systems continue to meet business project stakeholder needs. This role is a key liaison between the technical IT staff that implements business process management technology (BPMT)-based solutions and the line-of-business staff that performs the process work (manually or in conjunction with automated systems). BP analysts must be able to straddle the IT and business domains and communicate (or broker communications) between each side. This person is a hands-on worker who will drive the creation of process models (primarily conceptual/logical level models, often using business process analysis [BPA] tools). This role deals with the more tactical, day-to-day aspects of discovering, validating, documenting and communicating business-process-related knowledge through modeling, simulating and analyzing current and future states. The BP analyst supports the business process owner, enabling them to make better decisions about changing processes to drive higher performance outcomes consistently.
Few technical responsibilities are required for the BP analyst role, which is more focused on the following operational responsibilities, along with some transformational (leadership and communication) responsibilities:
• Provide a bridge role between IT and the business, communicating and, indeed, translating between different perspectives or views about business operations using different vocabulary to match those views.
• Communicate and translate required business process capabilities and outcomes effectively between business process areas and supporting departments (such as the IT organization).
• Model and enhance business process diagrams and other related models to capture business operations change requirements within defined opportunities or projects, modeling both current and future state, typically using a graphical BPA or business process modeling tool.
• Ensure proper coordination between the IT organization and process owners by defining conceptual and logical levels of detail in the business process models.
• Define the needed business cases with project team and process owner, defining business outcomes, including current baseline and future target metrics, such as leading and lagging indicators, and linking to strategic key performance indicators (KPIs).
• Determine and document the impact of process changes for the process owner.
• Hand off process model and rule changes to a solution architect to coordinate business process management suite (BPMS) or other automation system changes.
• Collaborate with IT peers in enterprise architecture (EA), solution architecture and application development (AD), program and project management (PPM), business intelligence (BI), corporate performance management, and other disciplines regarding the common theme of business performance improvement.
• Understand and demonstrate through models how the business processes support business and corporate strategies and objectives.
• Select appropriate BPM approaches for projects, particularly between build-to-last (stable, structured and fully automated) and build-to-change (dynamic, goal-oriented, case management, less structured and more social) approaches to change.
• Via models, demonstrate the opportunities for BPI to the process owner and other key project stakeholders.
• Suggest process flow, personnel resource, policy, goal and rule changes along with metrics to measure the impact of those changes.
• Search internal and external resources for prebuilt models, templates and services to meet process needs.
• Work within guidelines driven from enterprise architecture by the business process architect when determining the current "as is" state of a business process, and update current-state business process documentation as needed.
• Work with the business process architect, process owner, executive sponsor, business subject matter experts and others as necessary to determine the future state of a specific business process.
• Understand at a high level how implemented applications support business processes under consideration for change.
• Contribute to the definition, development, implementation and maintenance of the business process improvement methodology to be employed.
• Input process model and rule changes into BPMSs and other BPMTs.
• Perform continuous reviews to align processes (for example, models, goals and expectations) with changing business conditions for a given business process or functional area.
• Educate process stakeholders on how to identify and solve process challenges through the simulation of different scenarios, analysis of performance metrics and advanced optimization techniques.
• Use increasingly detailed levels of functionality in business process modeling tools as standardized on within the enterprise, including multiple modeling tools.
• Work with the process owner and other business roles to enable them to exploit BPMT capabilities to support build-to-change requirements.
• Train and provide guidance to other team members as required.
