Niagara College, widely regarded as one of Canada’s most innovative applied learning post-secondary institutions, has expanded its international reach through five satellite campuses located in Saudi Arabia. With a strategic focus on developing “world-ready and work-ready” graduates, the campuses specialize in delivering a number of diploma programs in the areas of Tourism, Event Management, Hospitality, Business, Occupational Health & Safety, Graphic Design, IT, and a Foundation Program for English language development.
Applications are invited for the position of Associate Principal, Academic at Niagara College KSA, Al Ahsa female campus. Reporting to the Campus Principal, the Associate Principal, Academic is responsible for overseeing the creation and execution of all Career Services/OJT, curriculum development of Foundation and Vocational Diploma Programs, and quality assurance whilst providing strategic leadership in a positive, energetic and dynamic manner. The successful candidate shall be responsible for building a strong, unified team of faculty and staff who will meet the educational mission of the College by providing outstanding applied learning to prepare graduates for successful employment. The incumbent shall also ensure successful integration of the programs so that faculty can competently meet the academic needs of the organization and career services.
The role of Associate Principal, Academic is designed to support the Campus Principal and provide leadership on all matters related to learning, teaching, and the student experience from the classroom through to their career.
The Associate Principal, Academic must feel they have sufficient authority to complete their responsibilities with the support of the Campus Principal. It is recognized that existing structures within Faculty and Academic Units mean it is important that there is flexibility in the scope and the identity of this individual.
This position has duration of 12 months, with the possibility of renewal.
The anticipated start date of this position will be August 13, 2017.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Leadership and Strategic Direction
- Lead the strategic goals of the College through sound planning and execution of all Foundation and Diploma programming
- Provide leadership to the Chairs and academic team in each department with the
development of academic programs in accordance with the mission and goals of the College
- Execute and lead the development of new and
existing programming and related courses within the Foundation, Associate Diploma, and Diploma programs
- Lead the strategic development of learning and teaching within the academic unit, taking
account of developments within the discipline(s), changes in the market, Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body (PSRB) requirements, and
best practice in learning and teaching
- Maintain and develop program portfolio: new program, adaptation of existing programs, and withdrawal of others
- Monitor and evaluate the academic unit’s teaching activities in relation to comparable academic units both within and outside the College using internal and external data e.g. CHAPP, PET, SSS, etc.
- Research and implement appropriate modes teaching methods such as e-learning and
new modes of delivery such as part-time or distance learning, where permitted
- Take a strategic overview of the development of faculty in the academic unit, supporting their development of new programs and the withdrawal of others, where desirable
- Remain connected and current with industry through various formal (CAC) and informal channels
- Lead the quality assurance process with external partner agencies, including CoE, SSS & TVTC and their agents (KPMG, Deloite, etc.) as part of the annual Institutional Review process
- Liaise regularly with CoE via the Education Advisor visits
- Lead the development and monitoring of departmental budgets and act as the
senior departmental budget holder to ensure prudent and responsible spending
- Assist in the development of recruitment, admissions, and retention processes and systems to ensure critical key performance
indicators in regard to enrolment and retention targets are met
- Oversee student progress, learning supports, and remedial teaching opportunities
- Facilitate the development and implementation of the ‘On-the-Job-Training’ strategy and assist with the coordination of employers/sponsors for the Associate Diploma and Diploma programs
- Oversee the development and operations of the Career Services Department
General Academic Management
- Be an active member of the College’s academic management/executive team, ensuring that the academic team implements the College’s strategic plan, complies with the directives from the funders, and keeps up-to-date with policies and procedures
- Represent the academic unit on the relevant Faculty & Staff / Student Experience Committee(s) and play a role in developing faculty
- Gather and represent the views on learning and teaching of faculty at an institutional level
- Gather and represent the changes and feedback from industry at a program level
- Obtain feedback and disseminate information from faculty and institutional bodies to raise awareness of and implement institutional and faculty expectations
- Contribute to the development of College strategy and policy
- Represent the academic unit at the Principal’s Council and other related committees
- Ensure programs are being managed in accordance with ITC expectations including regular on-going review using a defined evidence base
- Maintain an overview of the effectiveness with which students’ views are heard and engaged with in the academic unit
- Support the development and monitoring of departmental budgets and act as senior departmental budget holder to ensure prudent and responsible spending
- Monitor student progress, learning supports, and remedial learning opportunities
- Lead the development and maintenance of Foundation and Diploma studies curriculum to ensure that all levels of curriculum learning goals are met
Staff Management
- Liaise with students, faculty and administration with responsibility for learning and teaching matters e.g. Manager Academic Excellence, and relevant administrative colleagues within NC KSA
- Facilitate dialogue between teaching colleagues to share effective teaching practice to raise awareness of academic integrity, best practices, and lessons learned
- Encourage staff and students to engage in
opportunities and/or priority projects to develop their programs and teaching, such as internal and external funding opportunities and programs
- Be involved in recruitment of teaching staff and play a role in the recruitment process for new staff with a significant teaching role
- Support the chairs in their workload allocation duties with respect to teaching duties
- Play a role in the induction of new members of staff and support development of existing staff
- Ensure new staff are connected with appropriate development opportunities, such as mentors or CAE online training modules
- Assist with faculty recruitment, hiring, training, and ongoing professional development
- Assist with the development and management of the faculty performance review process and professional development offerings
