Job Summary:
Performs sterilization of used instruments, dressing and other materials received from all areas and units.
Providing sterile supplies to all areas and units in the hospital and ensuring the readily availability of sterile supplies (e.g. gauze, cotton balls, cotton tip applicator and etc.) at all times.
Provide guidance to the CSSD staff and manage the department to its utmost efficiency.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports and participates in the development of the philosophy, objectives and policies of the hospital.
- To follow the daily assignment as prepared by the Supervisor/In-Charge or prepares the daily assignment to staff in the absence of the Supervisor.
- To check and inspects all used instruments and other materials returned from all areas and units in the hospital ensuring that all are identified according to name, type, functions and size.
- Ensures that infected material is immediately disinfected taking meticulous care to wear protective clothing. . 5.5 Assembles, returned surgical instruments after cleaning into various sets.
- Packs sets in a manner consistent with sterile techniques and medical arrangement procedure. Identifies each set by fixing its official name on the outer covers with expiry dates and packing dates.
- Assembles and prepares various operating material used in theaters such as abdominal sets, surgeon’s gowns and all needed packs for daily posted operations.
- Operates complicated high-pressure autoclaves selecting the correct program for sterilizations according to the nature of the material being sterilized.
- Ensures adequate safety measures are observed in the handling of equipment.
- To follow the policy and procedure on how and when to recall.
- To understand and follow the use of chemical indicator and biological indicator.
- To report promptly to immediate supervisor and infection control staff in case of equipment malfunction.
- To wear a Personal Protective Equipment.
- Is responsible for the ordering of consumables for the department.
- Receive, check, sort, clean and dry instruments.
- To understand and follow the correct cleaning, packing and sealing procedure for instruments and linen for steam autoclave.
- Is conversant with the sealing and packing of all instruments and linen.
- To load and distribute items in the steam autoclave in accordance with manufacturers guidelines.
- Oversees the collection of used items.
- Is neat and tidy at all time and follows the policy regarding the dress code in the department.
- Follows the hospital Infection Control recommendation.
- Knowledge and understanding of electrical safety practices as they apply to the department.
- Accepts the Director of Nursing decision to assume other responsibilities as necessary and available on call for emergencies.
- Participates in Fire and Safety Training/Drill and hospital wide Quality Improvement activities.
