Duties and Responsibilities
Ante Natal Ward
Attends to patients who comes for assessment from Emergency Department (ED) and gives relevant midwifery care and management
Functions as a charge nurse in the absence of the Head Nurse or Assistant Head Nurse, and supervises all midwifery care to patients and implement care plan
Renders care to all antenatal patients assigned to her, admits patients and takes responsibilities of other patients in the unit
Does vaginal examinations to patients whenever necessary to assess the progress of labour
Recognizes emergency situations, takes appropriate action to provide initial stabilization of the mother and foetus, pending arrival of the Physician, e.g. in eclamptic or antepartum haemorrhage patients
Plans and provides teaching to their understanding of pregnancy and childbirth, by using the patient educator
Exercises professional behaviour and is responsible for her actions as a Registered midwife
Ensures that the Cardiotocography machines are functioning and in order during her shift
Performs uncomplicated unit deliveries when Labour ward is full or patient is in precipitate labour, and adhere to the unit guidelines for unit deliveries
Ensures that the Observation rooms are properly equipped and the Eclamptic tray is complete
Labour Room
Attends to patients who comes for admission from Antenatal or Emergency Department (ED) and gives relevant midwifery care and management
Functions as a charge nurse in the absence of the Head Nurse or Assistant Head Nurse, and supervises all midwifery care to patients and implement care plan
Performs uncomplicated deliveries, and adheres to the unit guidelines for unit deliveries
Monitor the progress of the mother in the perinatal period and provides all necessary health education to the mother to ensure optimum progress of both the mother and baby
Performs episiotomies whenever indicated and repairs episiotomies and uncomplicated tears such as fist degree tear
Performs Vaginal Examinations whenever necessary, to assesses progress of labour
Assists the doctors with complicated deliveries and other obstetric procedures
Exercises professional behaviour and is responsible for her actions as a Registered Midwife
Attends to Caesarean sections in OR, and give immediate care of newborn whenever necessary
Recognizes Emergency situations, takes appropriate actions to provide initial stabilization of the mother and Foetus, pending arrival of Obstetrician, e.g. as in Pre-eclamptic, Eclamptic, APH or PPH
Post Natal Ward
Attends to patients that comes from Labour Ward, Operating Room or ICU post-delivery or post- caesarean section and gives relevant midwifery care and management
Functions as a charge nurse in the absence of the Head Nurse or Assistant Head Nurse, and supervises all midwifery care to patients and implement care plan
Renders care to all postpartum patients and newborn babies in the unit and ensures proper care is rendered appropriately
Exercises professional behaviour and is responsible for her actions as a Registered Midwife
Recognizes emergency situations, takes appropriate action to provide initial stabilization of the mother or baby, pending arrival of the Physician
Plans and provides teaching to their understanding of baby care and breast feeding, by using the patient educator
