JOB SUMMARY
Accountable for managing and leading an assigned unit on a 24-hour basis by organizing, coordinating, directing, and planning its functions.
Whilst being aware of budgeting, resources both human and material will maintain the highest standards of clinical care within the ward/unit.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assessing patients’ needs, planning and implementing or coordinating appropriate care from accepted best practice.
2. Provide on-going supervision of clinical care in the unit and monitor the quality of care in designated unit and initiate action and implementation of the corrective measures.
3. Coordinates and participates in the delivery of standard patient care ensuring compliance with physician’s orders and established policies and procedures.
4. Join daily round in the assigned ward and ensure that physician’s orders are carried out, clarify any areas of uncertainty and in any dispute regarding clinical management, refers that matter to the appropriate Medical Consultant.
5. May provide direct nursing care, as necessary; carry out a variety of treatments and procedures to assist the staff nurse in providing care with various cases and conditions.
6. Takes direct and appropriate action in urgent and emergency situation.
7. Reporting all incidents and accidents to Nursing Administration and other relevant departments and ensure effective communication regarding all management and unit issues.
8. Maintains proper and prompt channels of communication between different members of team and with other departments, to coordinate appropriate care with timely and high quality standards.
9. Takes part in establishing comprehensive quality improvement program, and prepare reports and proposals as required for the development of designated unit, and nursing services.
10. Prepare work/shift schedules, vacation schedule and verify bed assignments of designated unit and ensure adequate coverage at all times and proper allocation of staff.
11. Identifies learning needs of staff and participate in the learning program and in teaching of staff nurse, orientees and student nurses.
12. Prepare Annual Competency Based Training Schedules and ensure that the staff complies with in-service educational and continuing education policies.
13. Assess and evaluates performance of the staff nurses and orientees.
14. Estimate and recommend resources required for the unit and maintain relevant records accurately.
15. Ensure all the resources are adequate, appropriate and available at all times to ensure efficient and effective nursing care services.
16. Makes annual projection of supplies needed in the unit, and establish and maintain inventories of equipment and other supplies.
17. Reports evaluation for the quantity and quality of materials / equipment present in the unit.
18. Monitors proper usage of machines and equipment to prevent misuse and improper care of materials.
19. Plan and conduct regular unit meetings to motivate nursing/health team members and promote a positive customer service approach towards patients, family and visitors.
20. Identify areas for clinical research and participate in research activities and quality improvement activities.
21. Effective participation in Nursing Management Meetings and in other hospital committees as required.
22. Adheres to hospital policies and procedures as well as should assure other nurse compliance.
23. Perform and supervise other assigned tasks relevant to this function.
