Job Summary:
Responsible for the management of the CSSD providing professional help and guidance to technicians and assistant technicians.
Ensures that the department operates efficiently providing sterile supplies to all areas and units within the hospital.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports and participates in the development of the philosophy, objectives and policies of the hospital and interprets them to the staff in the CSSD.
- Formulates, prepares, writes then implements and evaluates the policies of the department.
- Works closely with the Infection Control Department in the day to day operation of the department.
Supervises:
- The receiving instruments and other materials for sterilizing by steam autoclaving.
- The packing and sealing of instruments and linen.
- The loading, distribution of goods in the autoclaves.
- The CSSD top-up system in the hospital.
- The readily availability of dressing supplies to all areas and units within the hospital.
- The use of chemical indicator and biological indicator.
- When a biological indicator reveals positive and when to recall.
- Ensures adequate safety measures are observed in handling of equipment.
- Is responsible for the ordering of consumables for the department that they meet the hospital’s needs.
- Prepares a yearly inventory of stocks and its replacements.
- Implements new product evaluation. Reports results to Infection Control Department on a timely basis.
- Observes cost containment practices, evaluates and recommends appropriate inventory levels.
- Inspects the instrument on a regular basis and reports any losses, repairs, replacement that may be needed to the Infection Control Department.
- Identifies present and potential needs of the department assists in formulating courses of action to meet those needs.
- Prepares the monthly schedule for the staff, vacations and their daily assignment of duties.
- Holds a monthly staff meeting.
- Prepares a monthly report for submission to the Infection Control Department.
- Provides input to determine manpower of the department.
- Monitors the performance of the Cleaner in the department.
- Ensures regular maintenance is performed on all equipment and communicates with the Biomedical / Maintenance Engineering Departments.
- Follows the hospital Infection Control recommendations.
- Provides a comprehensive department orientation program for all new staff and evaluates their performance at the end of their probationary period in writing.

- “Hands on” experience with all pieces of equipment and specialty instrumentation.
- An awareness and understanding of other hospital departments with whom we are closely associated.
- Knowledge of Basic Life Support, hospital fire evacuation procedure and safety regulations and disaster plans and attends set demonstrations.
- Demonstrate basic understanding of management skills and principles with a desire to expand his/her knowledge and experience in this area.
- Familiar with, and able to perform, all duties of personnel under his/her supervision.
- Participates, when requested to do so, on inter - intradepartmental committee’s contributing knowledge and ideas to reach set objectives.
- Participates, when requested to do so in the activities of the Patient Care Services and supports and encourages other hospital staff to be involved.
- Accepts the Infection Control’s decision to assume other responsibilities as necessary and available on call for emergencies.

- Identifies areas of concern and then discusses problem solving measures with the Infection Control Department.
